Description

5K full-frame fully-stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS sensor for speed, detail and latitude
The full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor enables fast readout for high-resolution, high-frame-rate recording. Wide latitude and low noise ensure smooth gradation and natural textures, even in high-contrast scenes.

BIONZ XR2™ with integrated AI processing for enhanced shooting support
The BIONZ XR2 engine delivers dramatic improvements in image, sound, communication, operation and more. Its integrated AI processing supports advanced subject recognition and deep-learning-based illumination estimation for more accurate Auto Tracing White Balance (ATW) and more dependable shooting support in demanding conditions.

Open Gate and other image scan modes
The FX5 offers full-frame Open Gate recording — a first in the Cinema Line FX series. With 5K up to 120 fps (FF 3:2) , 4K up to 240 fps (FF crop) and more, it gives you the freedom to adjust framing, speed and workflow to realise even the most ambitious vision.

Internal X-OCN compressed RAW video recording
Capture 16-bit scene-linear X-OCN internally, eliminating the need for an external RAW data recorder. With LT, C1 and C2 codecs, you can balance image quality, file size and RAW workflow flexibility to suit the production.

Wide 15+ stop latitude with low noise
Wide 15+ stop latitude helps capture highlight and shadow detail with smooth, natural gradation. Low shadow noise preserves clarity, texture and atmosphere, so scenes retain a more convincing sense of depth and mood while giving you footage that is easier and more flexible to grade.

Three Base ISO settings for effective noise control in any environment
Three Base ISO settings – a standard ISO 800, a mid-sensitivity ISO 4000, and a high-sensitivity ISO 12800 for low light – are available to match your shooting environment. Capture clean shadows and wide latitude across varied lighting conditions, for consistently stunning clarity.

Dual Gain Shooting debuts in the Cinema Line FX camera series
Dual Gain Shooting maximises latitude while reducing noise to enhance shadow details. Making full use of the sensor’s capability, it delivers smooth, natural gradients for greater editing flexibility.

High-frame-rate capture, including 5K at up to 120 fps
High frame rates open up striking slow-motion possibilities. The FX5 records up to 5K at 120 fps and 4K at 240 fps, giving creators the power to capture fast-paced action with impressive detail and clarity — ideal for everything from cinematic storytelling to sharp sports and documentary footage.

Precise, reliable AF and tracking with AI-based subject recognition
With built-in AI processing, the BIONZ XR2 engine accurately recognises human, animal and bird eyes (Real-time Eye AF). Fast Hybrid AF uses up to 759 points to support confident focusing in demanding situations, including darker scenes. Real-time Tracking also helps the camera stay with the subject smoothly and precisely, even when depth of field is shallow.

Built-in de-squeeze for anamorphic shooting
Built-in de-squeeze support makes anamorphic shooting easier on set. With 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x and 2.0x settings, the FX5 works smoothly with a wide range of anamorphic lenses.

Deep learning-based illumination estimation
Deep-learning-based illumination estimation achieves unprecedented Auto Tracing White Balance (ATW) accuracy, even in challenging scenes. It delivers accurate colour reproduction even under lighting conditions that previously tended to cause colour cast.

S-Cinetone™ for a refined cinematic look
S-Cinetone brings Sony cinema colour science to the FX5, delivering natural skin tones, smooth gradation and a polished look straight out of camera.

Wide-gamut colour for more grading control
With colour gamuts exceeding both BT.2020 and DCI-P3, S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine retain broad colour information for more precise grading and easier colour matching with VENICE 2 in multi-camera shoots. Smooth tonal expression and stable colour reproduction also help you achieve the intended look with greater accuracy.

Three S-Log3 modes for flexible workflows
From cinematic shoots to run-and-gun, choose Cine EI, Cine EI Quick or Flexible ISO to capture imagery with maximum latitude. You can also import up to 16 user LUTs allowing you to monitor the intended look while shooting.

Lightweight, compact design for agility on set
The compact flattop body and stable grip are built for comfortable handheld work. Paired with Sony’s compact lenses, the FX5 becomes a mobile system for flexible shooting with gimbals, in tight spaces and in fast-moving productions.

5-axis stabilisation for steadier handheld shooting
A precision stabilisation unit and gyro sensors combine to provide optical 5-axis in-body stabilisation. An enhanced stabilisation unit expands the roll-direction compensation range by up to 2x, effectively reducing handheld roll shake. Dynamic active Mode adds extra electronic support, and embedded stabilisation metadata can also be used in post-production for a more controlled final result.

High-quality 96 kHz / 32bit float audio recording
The XLR handle unit supports two XLR/TRS inputs, a 3.5 mm stereo mini jack and up to 96 kHz / 32bit float audio recording. With up to four channels of high-quality capture, it also supports independent 32bit float WAV recording alongside video audio for more flexible on-set sound workflows.

Optional OLED viewfinder DVF-EL1 for easier outdoor monitoring
Add the optional OLED viewfinder for more immersive monitoring in bright locations. Its 3.5-type panel features approx. 7.07 million dots, DCI-P3 equivalent colour gamut, 10-bit display, HDR monitoring support, and 0.90x magnification, while the 0°-90° tilting design and selectable display modes help adapt monitoring to different shooting styles.

3.5-type monitor with 4-axis multi-angle design
The 3.5-type 16:9 aspect monitor tilts 98° up, 40° down and 180° sideways, and rotates up to 270° when open. A high-brightness panel with 15 brightness settings, fine control of image inversion display, and neatly organised on-screen shooting information all help make monitoring clearer and more flexible on set.

BIG6 (HOME) screen for faster on-set control
Inherited from Sony’s high-end CineAlta cameras, the BIG6 (HOME) screen brings six essential settings — frame rate, EI/ISO/Gain, shutter, iris, LUT and white balance — together on one clear home screen for faster operation. Touch control, the multi-function dial, and CineAlta Fixed/Variable frame-rate control help crews work quickly while keeping critical settings visible at a glance.

Monitoring support for precise shooting
Exposure and focus tools, including Waveform Monitor, Histogram, False Color, and Focus Map, support faster judgments on set. They help you manage highlights, shadows, skin tones and critical focus with confidence.

Movie-first menus and controls
From menu settings to the CineAlta-style multi-function dial, the FX5 is designed around movie production. Frequently used controls are concentrated around the grip and top panel, and the multi-function dial supports both rotational and push operation for faster access to key settings during a shoot.

Clear tally visibility
Configurable front and rear tally lamps make REC/STANDBY status easier to see, and a red frame can also be shown on the monitor during recording. This helps you confirm recording status at a glance, even when a rig or gimbal makes the screen harder to view directly.

Clear Image Zoom for smoother, more intuitive framing
Clear Image Zoom adds a [Smooth Priority] mode that enables seamless zoom from the optical wide end up to 2x digital zoom. [Optical Zoom Priority] is a zoom mode that prioritises image quality. After the optical zoom reaches its telephoto end, Clear Image Zoom takes over. Seamless zooming can also be controlled from the zoom ring on compatible lenses for more intuitive, consistent framing.

Dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots for flexible media workflows
Dual CFexpress Type A slots support relay, simultaneous, and separated recording while also accepting SDXC (UHS-II/UHS-I) cards. Main and proxy files can be recorded to different slots, giving productions more flexibility in media choice, backup strategy, and file handling.

Power that keeps pace with long shoots
A high-capacity 2670 mAh NP-SA10 battery can provide up to 170 minutes of recording time. Optimised power management, improved charging speed, USB Power Delivery and battery condition display help simplify longer shooting days and make it easier to judge when battery replacement may be needed.

Durable, sealed body design
Refinements throughout maximise dust and moisture resistance for high reliability in demanding conditions. Sealing is used at exterior joints and around the battery cover to help prevent moisture and dust ingress, and the cooling fan is housed in a separate chamber for added protection.

Cooling designed for uninterrupted 170 minutes of recording
An efficient fan cooling system and advanced design deliver up to 3x the airflow, keeping the camera cool even when the LCD monitor is closed. Three fan modes [Auto], [Minimum] and [OFF in REC] let you balance cooling and operational noise to suit the environment and the production.

Flexible mounting points
Five screw holes for accessory mounting are provided around the body, with two more on the bottom for tripod mounting. The result is a body that is easier to rig and expand directly with essential accessories.

Monitor & Control for remote operation from mobile devices
With the Monitor & Control app, a smartphone, tablet or Mac becomes a flexible second screen for monitoring, camera settings and operation. It is a simple way to extend control for solo shooting, compact rigs, and other productions where flexible remote operation is useful.

Catalyst Prepare and Catalyst Prepare Plugin
Catalyst Prepare and Catalyst Prepare Plugin use camera metadata for fast shot review and correction. They provide format support, including X-OCN LT/C1/C2, along with key features such as stabilisation, lens breathing compensation, colour/LUT tools and transcoded export.

Flexible monitoring, power and timecode connections
The HDMI Type A output port supports flexible external monitoring, with the option to display shooting information on both the camera LCD and an external monitor, or separate status information from the image output. Dual USB Type-C® ports support power delivery and timecode input via an optional adapter cable.

Wired and wireless LAN connectivity for remote workflows
High-speed wired LAN and built-in Wi-Fi 802.11ax with 2×2 MIMO on 6 / 5 / 2.4 GHz bands support smoother remote control, file transfer and connected production workflows. Wired LAN support for 2.5GBASE-T, 1000BASE-T and 100BASE-TX also helps the FX5 slot more easily into modern multi-device and networked productions.

Accessibility features for more creators
Screen reader support, a menu magnifier, and other accessibility aids help make the FX5 easier to use for more creators. The lens mount index, multi-function dial, and buttons are designed so they can be easily located by touch, supporting more confident operation.

Power Consumption

⚡ Sony FX5 Cinema Camera • Electrical & Power Profile

  • Operating Voltage: 7.82V DC Nominal (Internal NP-SA100 Battery Bay) / 9V–20V DC via USB Type-C Power Delivery (USB-PD) / 14.4V Nominal via External V-Mount Battery Plate
  • Power Draw (Standard Recording — 4K XAVC S/HS, LCD Active): ~7.4W to 9.5W (CIPA standard baseline of 7.4W with standard zoom lens attached; ~9.5W Typical during standard cinema operation)
  • Power Draw (Active 5K Open Gate X-OCN + XLR Handle + Cooling Fan): ~9.5W Typical / 14W Maximum (Driving internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW recording to dual CFexpress Type A cards, active 5-axis IBIS, internal cooling fan, HDMI output, and dual 48V phantom power via the XLR-H2 handle unit)
  • On-Board Battery Standard: Sony NP-SA100 SA-Series InfoLITHIUM battery pack (7.82V, 2670mAh / 20.9Wh) with real-time percentage telemetry (Note: The FX5 introduces the higher-capacity 20.9Wh NP-SA100 cell rather than the older 16.4Wh NP-FZ100 standard)
  • External Supply Options: Dual USB-C ports supporting USB Power Delivery (minimum 9V/3A 27W recommended for continuous operation and simultaneous internal battery charging) or regulated 8V DC dummy battery coupler via D-Tap from a 14.4V V-Mount rig

⏱️ Estimated Operating Runtimes (9.5W Typical / 14W Max @ 85% Efficiency)

  • 🔋 Sony NP-SA100 20.9Wh (7.82V Internal): ~1.9 hours (1h 52m @ 9.5W) / ~1.3 hours (1h 16m @ 14W Max)
  • 🔋 V-Mount 98Wh (14.4V via USB-C PD / D-Tap): ~8.8 hours (8h 46m @ 9.5W) / ~6.0 hours (5h 57m @ 14W Max)
  • 🔋 V-Mount 150Wh (14.4V via USB-C PD / D-Tap): ~13.4 hours (13h 25m @ 9.5W) / ~9.1 hours (9h 06m @ 14W Max)
  • 🔋 V-Mount 190Wh (14.4V Studio / Cart Rig): ~17.0 hours (17h 00m @ 9.5W) / ~11.5 hours (11h 32m @ 14W Max)

📊 Engineering Note: The 85% Efficiency Standard

  • Usable Energy Derating: Published calculations apply a strict 0.85 multiplier (Usable Wh = Rated Wh × 0.85). Compact full-frame cinema cameras enforce a protective low-voltage cutoff threshold to prevent file corruption during high-bitrate X-OCN and XAVC recording on CFexpress Type A media, while the remaining variance accounts for DC-to-DC voltage step-down conversion losses (when regulating 14.4V D-Tap or USB-PD inputs) and thermal dissipation across the BIONZ XR2 processor and active cooling assembly.

⚠️ Production Advisory: Engaging 48V phantom power on both XLR inputs of the XLR-H2 top handle, activating dual-band Wi-Fi / 2.5GBASE-T LAN FTP transfers, or bus-powering external USB-C accessories will add directly to the 9.5W–14W base draw. When powering the FX5 via USB-C PD on a cinema rig, retain an internal NP-SA100 battery in the chamber to serve as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) during hot-swaps of external V-Mount packs.

🛠️ Full Rig Planning: Powering your Sony FX5 alongside an on-camera monitor, wireless video transmitter, and follow focus motor from a shared V-Mount battery? Access the interactive FRENEL Power & Battery Runtime Calculator to model cumulative amperage draw across your complete camera package.
